How many moving boxes do I need from Vienna to Vienna?

Time to move! And most people ask themselves how many moving boxes they will actually need. We have the answer.

Better to calculate generously

Is there anything more annoying than standing there on moving day without enough boxes and a pile of unpacked items? To stop that happening, it's better to calculate generously and stick to this rule of thumb:

· Allow one box per square metre of home

· Families should be even more generous: 30 boxes per person is a good benchmark.

You can choose from various sizes and types of moving boxes, as explained below.

How many items you can pack into a box depends not just on its size, but also on the quality of the boxes.

Standard moving box: approx. 60 x 30 x 33 cm

This box is the classic choice that comes to mind when thinking of moving. Usually, they are made from single-wall cardboard and feature a double base as well as double-reinforced handles. You should definitely look out for these features when buying moving boxes.

They are ideal for light to medium-weight items like clothes, DVDs, towels, shoes and dry food.

Their volume is 60 litres and they have a maximum load capacity of 35 kg.

So: how much fits into the box?

· 110 T-shirts

· 40 pairs of jeans

· 40 Tupperware containers

· 240 DVDs.

They are therefore intended for lighter items. If you pack them too full, they break easily.

Moving box: the sturdier option

As a rule, you can also buy this box size in a slightly sturdier version made from double-wall cardboard, with a double base and sometimes even reinforcing tape.

They are ideal for heavier items like tools, plates, magazines, photo albums or kitchen appliances.

Speaking of heavy items...

Book box: approx. 50 x 30 x 35 cm

Books should always be packed in a dedicated book box. Thanks to double- or even triple-wall cardboard, these are extra sturdy and feature reinforced handles.

Packing tip: even though these boxes are very sturdy, you shouldn't fill them to the top with books – it gets too heavy. It's best to fill only half the box with books and use the rest of the space for something lighter, like bed linen, accessories or a lightweight binder.

Their volume is 67 litres and they have a load capacity of approx. 40 kg.

Archive boxes or file boxes: approx. 40 x 33 x 34 cm

The ideal box for files, ring binders, magazines and photo albums.

This box is slightly smaller than the others, making it ideal not just for important documents, but also for odds and ends, cutlery and all the stuff in your drawer of old chargers.

Large transport boxes: approx. 75 x 45 x 43 cm

Large items naturally need more room to pack. But big doesn't always mean heavy, which is why these large boxes are often made from single-wall cardboard.

For this reason, they are suitable for light to medium-weight items.

Their volume is 145 litres and they have a load capacity of around 30 kg.

They are ideal for monitors, sculptures, toys, pictures, lamps and bags.

And if not everything fits into the moving boxes after all, you can store your boxes and items in a storage unit. With us in Vienna, for example.
