How to estimate your space requirements correctly
The most important rule of thumb: You need about 5 m³ per room if you disassemble furniture and stack boxes. A studio fits into 7–9 m³, a 2-room flat into 10–15 m³, a 3-room flat into 15–25 m³, a single-family home into 30–40 m³. For a cellar compartment with bicycles, tyres and seasonal clothes, 2–4 m³ is usually enough.
Our boxes are 2,3 to 2,6 m high. Use the height: Heavy boxes at the bottom, light ones on top, mattresses and tabletops upright against the wall. Leave a narrow aisle open so you can access everything at any time – we factor in a 15% reserve for this in the space calculator.
Unsure? Better choose one size larger – or start small and switch if needed. At Squarefoot you can move to a different box size at any time, without a new contract period.
Frequently asked questions about box size
How accurate is the space calculator?
The volumes are guidelines for dismantled furniture and stacked boxes, as used by removal companies. We add approx. 15% reserve so you can stack and reach your belongings. When in doubt: better go one size larger – you can switch at any time.
What fits into 1, 5, 10 or 20 m³?
1–3 m³ (XS): 10–30 moving boxes, suitcases, skis, tyres.
3–7 m³ (S): a cellar compartment or one room: bicycle, small furniture, 30–40 boxes.
7–15 m³ (M): studio up to a 2-room flat incl. bed, sofa, wardrobe.
15–30 m³ (L): 3–4-room flat or business storage with shelves.
over 30 m³ (XL): house, warehouse, archive with palletised goods.
How high are the boxes?
Most boxes are 2,3 to 2,6 m high – so you can stack your items. The exact internal dimensions are listed for each box on the location page.
Can I change size later?
Yes, anytime – provided a suitable box is available at the location. You only pay for the size you actually need.
What packing tips help?
Heavy boxes at the bottom, light ones on top. Disassemble furniture and place mattresses upright. Leave a narrow aisle open so you can reach everything. Shelving (which can be added) multiplies the usable area.
