How do I store a fridge in a storage unit?
Storing a fridge preserves its condition during a move, travel or home renovations.
Follow these steps to prepare your fridge perfectly for storage:
- Clean and dry
- Transporting your fridge safely
- Choosing the right storage location
This step-by-step guide keeps your fridge in top condition until you need it again.
Cleaning and drying your fridge
Before storing your fridge, make sure it is clean and dry.
Switch off your fridge and remove all items and food. If you have a fridge-freezer, defrost the freezer compartment and dry it thoroughly.
Note: If your fridge has a water dispenser, be sure to drain all water completely.
Remove shelves and drawers
Remove all detachable shelves and drawers and soak them in warm water with washing-up liquid. If the weather is nice, you can wash them outside, as it can be awkward in the sink.
Wipe down all surfaces of your fridge using a microfibre cloth and warm water with washing-up liquid. Cheap sponges can leave behind small plastic particles, so avoid using them inside your fridge.
Remove stains
For stubborn spots, mix baking soda and water into a paste and leave it on the stain for about 30 minutes, then wipe it off with a microfibre cloth. Avoid bleach and other disinfectants when cleaning the inside of your fridge. Cleaning with baking soda is a gentler, more natural option.
Leave the fridge doors open to dry. Meanwhile, wipe down the outside.
Prevent unpleasant odours by placing a small plastic cup or container filled with baking soda inside your fridge to absorb strong smells.
Great, now you're ready to store your fridge!
Transporting your fridge correctly
When loading and moving a fridge, always keep it upright to avoid damaging the cooling system.
Important: If you have to tilt the fridge to move it, let it stand upright for at least a few hours before plugging it back in and turning it on.
Different models require different handling. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions.
How to choose the right storage unit for your fridge
Choosing the right storage unit ensures your fridge stays clean, dry and in great condition.
Most importantly:
· Choose a dry storage unit.
By selecting a climate-controlled or climate-moderated storage facility, you prevent damage caused by humidity build-up.
- Always place the fridge upright to avoid damaging the internal mechanisms or cooling system.
- Leave the door open or slightly ajar to prevent odours and moisture or mould build-up.
- Do not wedge objects between the door and the fridge to keep it open, as this can damage the seal.
Cover your fridge with a blanket to protect it from dust and scratches.
FAQs about storing a fridge
Can I transport my fridge on its side?
This is not recommended, as lying a fridge on its side can ruin it. If you must tilt it briefly for transport, leave it standing upright for at least a few hours before turning it on again.
Some fridge models should never be laid on their side under any circumstances. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions during your move.
How long can I store a fridge?
Fridges generally do not have a specific storage limit. If you take the right steps to store your fridge safely, you can use it again even after years in storage.
