Moving into a storage unit in Vienna: the best packing tips
Whether moving locally or right to the other end of Austria: relocating your home can test your nerves. Moving always takes much longer than expected, and there are almost always small items left over that don't fit anywhere. They end up stashed between other things. The result: broken items, smashed objects and crushed boxes. You can avoid all this trouble by packing properly. We show you how.
A tip in advance: plan a bit extra packing time right from the start. Trust us – years of experience have taught us well.
How to best pack moving boxes
- Organise sufficient supplies and packaging materials. This includes enough high-quality moving boxes, tape, bubble wrap, packing paper, old newspapers, towels and waterproof felt pens. Do not skimp on these products. Too few or cheap moving boxes lead to overpacking, which results in damage during the move.
- Invest in new moving boxes or hire professional material from the moving company. New boxes are sturdier and protect your belongings better.
- If you use old or second-hand boxes, check them for tears, damp spots or holes. Do not tape over old adhesive tape; remove it and re-tape the box.
Packing for a storage unit (with us in Vienna & surroundings)
How to get the most out of your boxes!
Put heavy objects in first and top up with lighter items. You can then fill the gaps with fabric so that more valuable items don't shift during transport. Towels, bath sheets and rags work great for this.
- Do not overpack the boxes. Distribute heavy items across several boxes to make lifting and stacking easier. A comfortable weight to carry is 15 to 20 kilograms.
- Group similar items in the same boxes so you can label and find them more easily.
- Label boxes as clearly as possible. When you rent a storage unit from us in Vienna, it can often be weeks or months before you need the items again. Mark fragile items and electronics accordingly.
- Heavy objects like books and binders are best packed in smaller boxes.
How to pack crockery properly for the storage unit
- Fragile items (wine glasses, etc.) should be kept in their original packaging if possible. Place a towel or bubble wrap at the bottom of the box and on top of the items after packing for extra cushioning.
- Separate plates and bowls with a layer of packing paper or bubble wrap. We recommend using few newspapers, as newsprint can leave unsightly marks.
How to pack electrical appliances properly for the storage unit
- Pack electronic devices such as TVs, computers, monitors and DVD players in their original packaging with the corresponding polystyrene parts wherever possible, and wrap them additionally in bubble wrap. Checking the device's instruction manual provides extra information on what to consider during the move. Remove batteries before packing and storing electrical appliances, as they can leak or corrode and damage the device.
- Heavy household appliances sometimes need extra securing. For example, some washing machines require the drums to be locked in place.
We hope this checklist helps your belongings arrive even more safely at your storage unit in Vienna. If you'd like, we are happy to help with further tips.
