Storing baby items in a storage unit: Organization tips

Babies may be small, but they need a lot of stuff – especially baby clothes. Storing things smartly keeps order rather than chaos.

Anyone with a baby knows that multiple outfit changes a day are the rule rather than the exception. Efficient clothes storage is therefore a must.

Keep your baby's wardrobe neat and organized with these baby clothes storage ideas. After all, you're busy enough without having to rummage through a messy pile in the nursery to find your favourite babygrow.

Storing baby clothes in drawers

Before putting away new clothes, make sure all items have been washed. It's not an old wives' tale or overly cautious: most garments are treated with chemicals and dyes that can trigger allergic reactions. Always wash baby clothes first to protect delicate skin.

You will probably buy baby clothes in various sizes. To keep items that don't fit yet or anymore out of the way, you can store them in different places. Once a piece of clothing becomes too small, organise it into a "Size X" pile. You can pack this away for later or give it away.

Tip: Organise baby clothes by size, type and season. This saves a lot of time when you need to put together an outfit quickly.

Drawers are ideal for storing baby clothes. Because the garments are so small, you can fit plenty of baby items and accessories into a chest of drawers. The only problem is that drawers can quickly turn into a tangled, unorganised mess.

Dividers offer a simple solution. They allow you to sort items into your chosen categories. All you need is cardboard, scissors, and a felt-tip pen.

If you want it to look prettier, you can cover the dividers with wrapping paper – or, of course, opt for the premium versions available in baby shops or online.

Additional clothes rails

Adding a second or third clothes rail to the wardrobe doubles or triples your hanging space. Since baby clothes are short and small, you can fit the rails at different heights or adjust them as your child grows and their clothes get longer.

Over-door shoe organiser

Shoe organisers are the perfect size for nappies, socks, babygrows, etc. They are especially practical if your changing table and nursery are small and you want to make the most of every available centimetre.

With the right equipment, you can easily maximize the space in your baby's room.

A few more favourites: baby clothes storage

Baskets: Opt for wire baskets so you can see what's inside. This saves you a long search.

Baby storage box – Labelled storage boxes are excellent for items you know you won't need for a long time. Acid-free archive boxes are perfect. Plastic boxes aren't always ideal as they can encourage mould growth.

Vacuum bags: Use compression when storing fluffy or warm winter clothes. You can stack the vacuum bags to save space.
