10 surprising storage unit hacks you haven't thought of yet

Avoid stains, pack boxes properly, label them, and organise a move into self storage: we provide you with 10 useful ideas you probably haven't thought of yet.

Avoid stains

Do you have your clothes dry-cleaned? The print ink on dry-cleaning bags can leave unsightly stains over the long term. Especially when there is no air circulation. Swap the plastic covers for fabric covers to prevent stains and mould.

Declutter regularly

Check the items in your self storage unit every 6 to 12 months. You might notice that you no longer need certain things. You can then clear them out and possibly switch to a smaller unit. This can save you a significant amount of money.

Insurance

Your items are not automatically covered by our in-house insurance. Check whether your contents insurance offers the option to include a self storage unit. Protecting furniture and other belongings can be well worth it.

Cold temperatures?

Winter is approaching fast. Consider whether cold weather could damage your items. Storage is no problem in a temperate climate. However, if temperatures fluctuate greatly, it's better to keep things like cosmetics, perfumes, paintings, delicate clothing and artwork elsewhere.

Cover correctly

Although the doors are locked, dust cannot be completely avoided. Protect your furniture with cloths, plastic sheets or mattress covers.

Label like crazy

Label every box! After packing, labelling only takes a few seconds, and in 12 months you'll be glad you took the time. The more items you note on the label, the faster you'll find things again.

Photographic memory aid

Take photos of your belongings. This can be useful as a memory aid, but also for insurance in the event of damage. The more you document with photos, the better.

Our tip: if you are travelling and stuck deep in the Amazon or the African savannah for a longer period, it's best to leave a key with a local friend or relative. Photographic documentation can help this person find something you might need much faster.

Pack frequently used items near the door

Seasonal items such as Christmas decorations, winter clothes, winter bedding or carnival costumes should be packed near the door so you can access them quickly and effortlessly.

Rent the right size

If you are sure you will be storing your items long term, rent a slightly smaller unit. If you need a document or a piece of clothing now and then, we recommend a bit more space so you can rearrange items in the unit without shifting everything back and forth.

Save cash

Got a lot of things, but your lovely flat in Zug or Vienna doesn't offer as much space as you'd like? Then one of our affordable self storage units is the ideal option, saving you from paying extra rent for another room, a hobby room or a garage.
